It is the kind of place that I hate to tell others about but are too good not to share: Le Salon du Cinéma du Panthéon in Paris. Merci mille fois, Roger, for showing me this little gem!
Le Salon du Cinéma du Panthéon
Tucked up a hill in the 5ème arrondisement between La Sorbonne and the Jardin de Luxembourg hides Le Salon, above the Panthèon movie theatre.
There isn’t even a sign to indicate that there’s a restaurant inside. Head upstairs, past the balcony landing.
The summer menu features a generous trio of salads which change daily. No printed menus but a blackboard of daily specials, which the friendly manager or waitstaff will bring to your table/couch and discuss with you in English, if you require. Desserts are tantalizingly displayed on the banquette in the center of the room.
Le Salon opens weekdays at noon, serves food through the dinner hour, and offers cocktails for after-movie enjoyment.
French cinema legend Catherine Deneuve (that’s her photo above, between the fluted glasses) with Christian Sapet designed this modern, relaxed space. Wifi is free, and I understand from the management Le Salon is hopping with freelancers, work-from-home types and students from the nearby universities during the colder months.
In summer, it’s a perfect little getaway from the crowds, an alcove of cushy leather sofas and design magazines or on the enclosed outdoor patio among the bamboo flora.
Le Salon is located at 13 rue Victor Cousin 75005 Paris France, telephone number +33 (0)1 40 46 01 21.
